Preparing for a Consultation with Your Divorce Lawyer

By Sheryl Rentz on April 1, 2013

Choosing a Pennsylvania divorce attorney is an important decision if you are considering or entering a divorce. Your attorney will assist you with every stage of the process, so it is important to work with someone you feel confident about relying upon.

When you prepare for an initial consultation with a divorce attorney, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Prepare emotionally. A divorce ends one of the most personal relationships you have, and it affects other personal relationships, as well.  This means that you and your attorney will discuss things that are very personal – things that may make you frustrated, angry, or sad.  Preparing to face these honestly when you go into your consultation will make the process easier.
  • Consider your goals. Take some time to consider what your ideal outcome is in the divorce and whether it is in your best interests and those of your children, if you have them.  The more honest you are with yourself, the more effectively you can discuss your divorce with your attorney.
  • Prepare to discuss income. Gather as much income-related paperwork as you can, including bank statements, pay stubs, tax returns, and information about property, like real estate and investments.  Your income and your spouse’s will play a role in discussions of settlement and support.
  • Bring any legal paperwork. If you have a prenuptial agreement, a divorce summons, or paperwork related to personal protection orders or domestic violence cases, bring it with you.  If you’re changing attorneys, bring the paperwork from your divorce case to date, including copies of any court orders or agreements.
