Permanent alimony means that the set amount will be paid to the other partner until some terminating factor occurs. These factors can include several events but most typically are death, co-habitiation or remarriage. Permanent alimony may also be stopped at a mutually agreed upon circumstance, such as retirement or a health condition. Permanent alimony is regularly paid until one of the parties passes away.

Rehabilitative alimony is an amount intended to raise the ex-partner to a financial or educational level in order to be financially independent. Examples include paying for job training or university education. In such cases, the ex-partner receiving the alimony must make a detailed case for their rehabilitation and include the steps needed to be taken in order to achieve financial independence. A basic time frame will also be outlined in any Pennsylvania rehabilitative alimony agreement.

Reimbursement alimony is awarded in cases where one spouse supported another’s educational or job training with the understanding that the education would lead to more income. Reimbursement alimony is generally only the amount paid to the other spouse during the period of education and is not based on the income of the ex-partner following the education. A spouse may reclaim their money spent while paying for their partner’s law school education, for example, but may not recover reimbursement alimony based on their partner’s income as a lawyer.

Limited duration alimony is a payment over a pre-set period of time. The circumstances that lead to an award of limited duration alimony vary and are dependant upon a few uncommon circumstances. Death of the person paying any type of alimony will result in the ending of the alimony in most every case.
