Top 7 Post-Divorce Practices When Dealing With Children

If you have children, try to stay in tune with their feelings and handle the situation as delicately as possible. There are several types of child custody agreements that will allow the child to spend an equal amount of time with both parents and keep the child’s daily routine as normal as possible. We also recommend:

  • Take their feelings seriously. Divorce creates many negative emotions, and you shouldn’t demand or expect your children to just "get over it" right away.
  • Be open with them. Explain the circumstances as best you can, but be age-appropriate.
  • Remind them that both parents still love them. Children often blame themselves for the demise of the relationship. Reassure them that it’s not their fault.
  • Encourage their relationship with the other parent. Having two loving parents is better for a child, no matter how you feel about your ex. Put your feelings aside and encourage your children to speak and spend time with the other parent regularly.
  • Don’t bad-mouth your ex. Refrain from voicing your personal opinion of the other parent around your children. Doing this will force children to feel like they have to choose sides.
  • Don’t become the "fun parent." It can be tempting to overindulge your child to make up for the emotional trauma of divorce. However, reassurance, rules, and consistency are the best combination to help children adjust successfully to the new situation.
  • Take care of yourself. To be the best parent you can be, you have to process and deal with your own personal issues as well.

When You Need a Divorce, Call Us

Not all divorces have to involve lengthy court proceedings that take years to finalize and cost thousands of dollars in the process. Having a prenuptial agreement in place would make the process easier, however, if you do not have a prenup, there is no need to worry. We will do our best to get all assets divided as fairly as possible, and get you a secure future.

Before a case goes to trial, we suggest trying to settle all issues with your ex through mediation. During mediation, we will speak on your behalf and your spouse’s lawyer will do the same. Handling your case in mediation saves a lot of time and money, but if an agreement cannot be made, we will proceed to court and fight for your best interests.
